Everyone tells you to meditate; nobody tells you how to survive the first five minutes. Here is the honest starter guide we give every new student at Mossline — no apps, no incense, no pretzel required.
Sit like you mean it (comfortably)
Chair, cushion, or sofa — all fine. Stack your head over your ribs over your hips, rest your hands anywhere, and unclench your jaw. Discomfort will end a session faster than any wandering thought, so get genuinely comfortable first.
Give the mind one boring job
Count exhales from one to ten, then start over. That's the whole technique. The mind will wander by breath three — that isn't failure, that's the rep. Each time you notice and return, the focus muscle gets one rep stronger.
Start embarrassingly small
Five minutes daily beats thirty minutes weekly. Set a timer, keep the same chair and same time of day, and let the streak do the motivating. Most students feel a difference — falling asleep faster, snapping slower — within two weeks.
When to get help
If sitting alone feels impossible, that's what guided classes are for. A teacher's voice carries beginners through the restless middle minutes — join our Meditation & Breathwork circle any Monday, Wednesday, or Saturday.
